More about Fafine Niutao I Aotearoa
Fafine Niutao I Aotearoa holds generations of knowledge on pandanus weaving and kolose. The Niutao approach to pandanus weaving incorporates motifs of dyed fibre into the main body of weaving – with coloured, decorative elements seamlessly woven in as the entire mat progresses.

Workshop participants are invited to try their hand at Tuvalu mat weaving, using pandanus leaves that have been harvested and shipped from the island of Niutao.

Kolose is often used to create brightly coloured celebratory garments, incorporating both natural and synthetic fibres. The art of kolose is a highly-skilled practice, using complex handwork and a fine crochet hook to create detailed patterns. For weaving and crochet enthusiasts, this is a fantastic opportunity to gain insight into Tuvaluan approaches to textile production.
