Akoteu Kato Kakala Classroom Collective presents:
Falehanga – Empowering the Collective!
Exhibition dates are 3 Sept – 29 Sept

Akoteu Kato Kakala began as a playgroup in Māngere 21 years ago. They are now based in Ōtara and have been running as a licensed ECE Centre since 2006. This exhibition consists of their recent mobile sculptures with a strong focus on recycled and found objects.

Falehanga encapsulates the important roles of women and mothers within a Tongan family. Falehanga is used in this exhibition to highlight the enriching contribution Tongan women make to building success, empowering the collective and nurturing fānau within the Akoteu context of Aotearoa. This emphasizes the special relationship that makes up falehanga; which is the contribution of the mothers and the women within the nofo ‘a kāinga (kinship/extended family).

A strong element of falehanga includes nurturing of the fānau or the children to ensure that they thrive in what they do. This is reflected in the work and mission for the children at Akoteu kato kakala. There is also a strong foundation of a family unit that ties together this idea of falehanga that enables kato kakala ‘oku ‘alaha mo manongi – which is representative of the richness of the collections of kakala gathered in the kato (basket).
