Hopkinson Mossman presents LA-based New Zealand artist, Fiona Connor's, 'Closed Down Clubs and Monochromes'.

Fiona Connor's art practice uses strategies of repetition to produce objects that interrogate their own form and the contexts in which they are encountered.

The current exhibition comprises two distinct bodies of work. 'Closed Down Clubs' is a series of doors that document, through meticulous replication, recently closed ‘clubs’ in America. Each door in 'Closed Down Clubs' tells its own story, of a club (in the expanded sense) closed for reasons typically beyond their control, in a shifting economic, political, or technological landscape.

The 'Monochromes' are resin-cast reproductions of notice boards encountered across LA. These notice boards were maintained by a community authority, and regularly had their postings removed and their surfaces painted out in a particular colour.

The surfaces of Connor's works suggest both of these forces, the sheen of municipal regulation, and the uneven remnants of a community's cumulative activities, captured in time by the artist's intervention.
