" the bonds of love we meet."

It’s a phrase most of us have sung with varying degrees of passion, but is the affection it describes a reality in New Zealand's public life? What are the bonds of love? And where are we meeting to negotiate them?

This year's volume of Flint & Steel magazine, published by Maxim Institute, looks at how we cultivate better public discussions on the issues that divide and unite society. The contributors to this magazine have considered how this might be done: in neighbourhoods and families, in fraying institutions like media and politics, through different cultural lenses, and in the kinds of communities and education that form us to listen and love.

Rowan Light – Rowan is a lecturer and doctoral candidate at the University of Canterbury. In his article “Protest and Patriotism,” he looks at Anzac Day’s history as a platform for public debate, a “common moment of attention,” that allow us to negotiate our values as a society. This subject stems from his doctoral research exploring imperial and post-imperial remembrance of the First World War. His history of Anzac Day in Australia and New Zealand will be published in 2019.

Join us as we launch the magazine and spark some new conversations with one of our contributors, Rowan Light.
