Have you seen this bird?

Dr Laura Young will be talking about her work with Kea, endemic to New Zealand and the world’s only alpine parrot at this Forest & Bird Public Talk.

Laura discovered that young Kea can travel long distances to explore their environment, often 100 km or more. So she says it’s not surprising that Kea have been sighted in Waihopae Valley and Fairhall, probably flying down from Nelson Lakes to check out Blenheim’s areas.

These highly intelligent birds have been hunted in the past, and being ground-nesting birds are now are threatened by predation. Dr Young says that the public can help the Kea Conservation Trust by reporting any kea sightings at, this information will be most valuable for designing conservation work to help Kea recovery.

You can also help by donating towards support for kea recovery through “Save a Little” and These donations go towards work done by DOC and community groups helping Kea recovery in wildlife hospitals from lead poisoning which comes from the bird’s habit of chewing on lead nails and flashings.

Donations welcome.
