Join our wildlife keepers on a stroll through the park to meet our freshwater wildlife!

During this 1-hour encounter, you'll get to feed native longfin eels, meet giant kōkopu (our newest residents), and help spot koura (who love to hide)! Along the way, our wildlife keepers will have heaps of interesting facts and stories to tell!

You'll also get to stop at our spring water fountains for a refreshing drink.

Then our wildlife keeper will take you to the walk-through aviary where you will meet our two beautiful whio! Whio are endemic to New Zealand, and one of only four ducks species in the world that lives in fast flowing water.

Unfortunately the loss of habitat through changing land and water use has been a major threat to whio over the years. April is Whio Awareness Month and during this encounter you'll learn all about Whio, their unique characteristics and what can be done to secure the future of this endangered bird.

*Freshwater Encounter is free with a Rainbow Springs Day Pass.
