The effect wartime had on young couples in love is the focus of a more personal approach to this year's ANZAC Day commemoration at Golder Cottage, 707 Fergusson Drive, Upper Hutt.

Local Historian and Genealogist Lynly Yates has researched the "Intentions to Marry" applications at the National Archives and discovered that during the 1914-18 period many Wellington area Intention to Marry applications recorded an Upper Hutt district address.

Service personnel who married before they departed for overseas duty recorded Trentham as their place of residence and their length of stay here was often recorded as only a few weeks or months.

Listed on the applications from the would-be brides, their status was as spinsters or widows.

Lynly located 310 service personnel (soldiers) who listed their residence at the time as the Upper Hutt district. Eleven of those soldiers recorded their intention to marry in Upper Hutt itself, 100 at the Registrar's Office in Wellington and the remainder in other places in New Zealand. Only four made an application to marry, but never did.

Of interest to family historians will be the meticulously-researched alphabetical list of those making applications- many of the soldiers have a cross by their names, an indication that they died while serving in the First World War, bringing into stark reality the futility of war.

Golder Cottage is open on ANZAC Day from 1:30pm-4pm and every Saturday at the same time. A small entry fee applies.
