Guided Walking Tour of Christchurch's Hotel Archaeology

Where: Cathedral Square, Cathedral Square, Christchurch

Restrictions: R8

Registration Types:

  • Admission: Free
  • Eventfinda tickets no longer on sale

Take a walking tour with Heritage New Zealand and Christchurch archaeologists to learn about archaeological findings at some of Christchurch's earliest hotel sites. We'll introduce you to our free phone app, "Public Houses, Private Lives: excavating Christchurch's colonial hotels", which shows you artefacts and history from each site, and has short videos about the archaeological process. This is a great event celebrating National Archaeology Week, and all the amazing work our archaeologists have done after the Canterbury Earthquakes.

We will meet at Cathedral Square by the Police Kiosk, and also finish up at Cathedral Square where you are welcome to come have a coffee or drink at OGB Bar (Old Government Building).

The walk is 4km long, but at a leisurely pace, with stops at five former hotel sites. The route is flat and suitable for older kids. Expected time is 1.5 - 2 hours. There will be a detailed health and safety briefing about potential hazards, but we expect people to follow all road rules and behave responsibly.
