Join us for In the Tradition of Making, an exhibition of work by Floyd Perry and Oliver Roake from 21 Februrary - 16 March at Allpress Studio.

Floyd and Oliver are first and foremost makers. Makers of craft objects and art, their creative output equally reflects the influence of their studies at the Elam School of Fine Arts as it does their work as builders, landscapers and fabricators.

While both drawn to wood as their primary medium, their practices are also linked by their attitudes about making. The process of making an art work or an object is just as important to them as the final product. The works in the show illustrate the value they place on the time, skill and consideration it takes to complete each piece.

Based in Bethells Beach over the last year, Floyd describes his recent output as ‘Of the hand, by the hand, for the hand’. His smaller pieces on display quietly argue that banality can be beautiful, making art accessible through daily encounters while his hand made canoe champions the functionality of art on a larger scale.

Oliver, inspired and informed by craft, primarily works in sculpture. His series Re/Cognition, examines the way in which both sound and crafted objects are intertwined with memory and time. For Oliver, his attitudes towards his artist practice extends to his making of furniture, jewellery and craft objects which he sees as part of his artistic output rather than separate from it.

There will be a closing event held on 15 March at 6pm at Allpress studio, supported by Brothers Beer and Babich Wines.

All welcome.
