Jazz Vespers uses Jazz Music to explore spirituality alongside short reflections and prayer. Jazz is not only as played at Vespers as performance art, but as a spiritual music. The historic and earthquake-survivor, Trinity Methodist Church, presents this perfect event to see out another wonderful Art Deco Weekend.

For our Jazz Vespers for Art Deco Weekend we have:
Vocalist: Georgia Duder-Wood
Musician: David Selfe (piano)
Liturgist: Rev Tony Franklin-Ross

At Art Deco 2018 as a guest artist for the Royal New Zealand Navy Big Band, Georgia Duder-Wood is back by popular demand for our Jazz Vespers evening at Trinity. Georgia is a vocal artist with decades of performance experience in many genres of song; and a passion for where music and spirituality meet.

Her work has also included international musical theatre, longstanding Auckland musical residencies in jazz and soul, guest artist in cabaret and concerts, specialist for recording and session work. Georgia performed for our 2016 and 2017 Jazz Vespers for Art Deco Weekend to a full church and an appreciative audience - we are sure your spirit will soar with her soul-filled music this year too!

This year promises even more with Georgia being accompanied by renowned international jazz pianist David Selfe. These highly experienced musicians will perform a selection of favourites in the home of jazz, gospel and blues – promising an evening to move your hearts and get your sprits soaring! Come early to ensure a seat.

Donations are invited at the Vespers to support the Methodist Church’s objective of “Let the children live”. All funds received in the 2017/2018 season will support the local Colenso School for Teenage Parents. Each summer the Vespers raises around $1,600 to $2,000 for the local community groups such as Napier Women's Refuge, Napier Family Centre and Hawkes Bay Diabetes (Youth).

For this special Art Deco Jazz Vespers - we suggest a koha of $10 adult / $5 child.

What is Jazz Vespers?
Jazz Vespers contains elements of a concert and a worship service; offering opportunity for reflection through the notes of music and verse.

Jazz is a particularly effective resource for building inclusive community. Anyone can participate in making jazz. Even the most casual observer makes music when tapping or clapping spontaneously along with the beat.

Jazz is this infectious. It blurs the lines of listener and player and draws everyone deeper into its contours. Jazz sounds like God because jazz reflects God’s way of blurring lines.

Improvisation captures an always-growing faith. Jazz has many entry points. Entering into the music at any time and in whatever way is a vision for life together in community. Jazz finds its home in this church setting both for those who appreciate jazz for its own sake, but also those who feel its spirituality.

The current Summer Season continues on March 25 and April 22, also at 7pm.
