Australian Jock Serong scored a novelistic hat-trick with his debut Quota, 2016's superb crime tale of sibling rivalry and sporting fame The Rules of Backyard Cricket, and new thriller On the Java Ridge, set on the seas between Australia and Indonesia and in Canberra’s halls of power.

Brannavan Gnanalingam’s fifth novel, Sodden Downstream, explores inequality and the migrant experience, as a Sri Lankan cleaner struggles across a flood-ravaged Wellington to keep her job. They discuss migration, crime, injustice, politics and a shared love of cricket with Pete Monk of Featherston Booktown.

Writers & Readers On the Road is part of the 2018 New Zealand Festival.
