John Sutherland has been singing and playing for more years than he cares to remember and has long been called on for his mastery of guitar and harmonica. His first love was the sound of the American Bluesmen, particularly Big Bill Broonzy, but the music of his native Scotland is also dear to his heart.

His singing comes to the fore when he plays solo, with a Scottish soul that survives his long years in New Zealand and he is fluent in Celtic styles, traditional and modern. The singing of Archie Fisher, Dick Gaughan, Brian McNeill and Andy Irvine all provide inspiration.

A unique guitar style and sympathy for the material enables him to produce music of great variety from jazzy blues to Celtic grace notes, sometimes interspersed with phenomenal whistling. His album “Mealmarket Street” shows the range and depth of his music.

When he is joined by Susan his particular talent for harmony and arrangement is evident. They originally sang together in a four part a’capella British traditional group but the playlist is now more likely to reflect the influence of the other side of the Atlantic with material from singers as diverse as Madeleine Peyroux, Gillian Welch, Randy Newman and Bonnie Rait

Highly regarded on the folk club scene, John and Susan regularly sing at clubs and festivals and together they will provide an evening of heartwarming songs, old and new, sure to delight and entertain.

This event is 'cash only' as we have no Eftpos facilities.
