John Tarlton is a Californian-born artist, writer and educator who has spent the last forty years living and working in New Zealand and Australia. John’s current home is Foxton Beach and this is his second exhibition at Creative Arts Napier.

John has had several one-man shows. His art is represented in public and private collections in Australia, the United States and New Zealand, including Te Papa, New Zealand National Art Gallery, Auckland City Art Gallery, Rotorua City Art Gallery, Waikato Museum of History and Art, University of Auckland, and the State University of New York at Albany. His work is also published in Brown Warrick’s (1996). Another 100 New Zealand Artists. Auckland: Godwit Press.

John Tarlton’s work frequently features large-format painting, drawings in a wide variety of media, and marked by technical virtuosity. It also features mixed media, conceptual work, textual play, design and illustration.

Some of his key concerns include the investigation of post-Cubist space and play with Pop Art-derived imagery, dialogue between image and text, mostly with an emphasis on figurative motifs and the probing of themes touching the human condition. Irony has long been a strong modality in John’s work.

John’s exhibition will open on Friday 13 April 5-7pm, all are very welcome to come along!

To complement his exhibition, John will also tutor April’s Weekend Masterclass on 14 & 15 April, focusing on non-traditional watercolour painting. This is a unique opportunity to get up close to John’s work and learn directly from the artist himself.

Places on the workshop will be limited, so we urge you to book early!
