In the 1920s the Australian Museum, Sydney, exchanged a collection of Aboriginal and Papuan New Guinean material including a Galari (Wiradjuri) bargan (boomerang) with the Otago Museum, receiving two Maori amo (bargeboard supports) in return.

The amo, originally from the Hawkes Bay region, also connect to the unique concrete wharenui and church at Otakou marae on the Otago peninsula.

The ripples of colonial exchange continue to impact communities: Colonisation creating new global networks and relationships between indigenous peoples. In early 2018 Sydney-based artist Jonathan Jones (b.1978), a member of the Wiradjuri and Kamilaroi nations of south-east Australia, visited Otepoti to undertake research toward ta new work and discovered this connection between his Wiradjuri people and those of this rohe. Untitled (021.281 Galari bargan) is a physical manifestation of ancestral forms and new relationships.

Ongoing.
