In celebration of DOC's Conservation Week (15th - 23rd September) join Conservation Volunteers New Zealand (CVNZ) for a day of freshwater conservation in Onepoto Park. Thirty species of native freshwater fish (as well as 20 introduced species) reside or spend a significant part of their life cycle in New Zealand's rivers and streams.

Fifteen species have a marine phase in their life cycle so access to and from the sea is crucial if they are to survive. These species rely on streamside cover to provide cool, sheltered habitat. Water temperature and clarity, dissolved oxygen, toxic substances and nutrients all have an effect on the feeding, spawning and health of fish.

We will be removing rubbish from in the stream as well as tackling the invasive weeds growing on the banks. There may be some riparian planting involved. Working bee starts at 9:30 and ends around midday.

What to wear/bring: gumboots are highly reccomended, long sleeves and pants, jacket, hat/beanie, bring a water bottle and some snacks.

What we provide: gloves, tools, an experienced team leader and free transport to/from project (if required - ask about our pick-up locations).

Conservation Volunteering is not only about caring for the environment – it’s about caring for you and creating healthy communities. To help protect this precious resource, volunteer with us by making a booking online or get in touch for further information.
