Bruce MacMillan was a well-known Kāpiti Coast photographer working from the 1950s through to the 1980s.

During a time of significant social change, he captured hundreds of thousands of wonderful and diverse celluloid moments – including local people, special occasions, urban settings and local industry. Kāpiti Coast District Libraries now house and care for his extensive negative collection.

This exhibition is a collaboration between Kāpiti Coast District Libraries, Ra Higgott local resident, Bright Photo Lab and Mahara Gallery, Waikanae. The carefully selected images capture historical stories and forces through a photographic lens. Look closely and you may find your grandparents, aunties and uncles – or even your younger self.

At this time of year when we reflect on Te Tiriti o Waitangi and what it means to be a New Zealander on the Kāpiti Coast of Aotearoa New Zealand, these photographs are a true taonga.

They help us to tell the story of who we are and where we come from. They are a gift from Bruce MacMillan and the people he photographed across our region – together we acknowledge and remember them.

He kitenga kanohi, he hokinga mahara. A familiar face stirs the memory.
