[Is this]Life In Paradise?

Karen Sewell brings her work "Fantasy Island" to Cupid bar.

The event is open to all ages, provided they are accompanied by a parent or guardian.

"White, soft, sentinel faux fur palm trees, stand on a reflective water-like plastic and faux fur shark character come together with ‘tropical’ flowers and real palm plants and grasses. Life In Paradise? is offered as an installation to walk in, sit in, play in, enjoy and contemplate in as you wish. It is both a parody and an island of hope. As an artist I am interested in all things that promote the blossoming of life, both for people and our planet.

The central ideas in this work seek to address specific forces of power and control pervasive in our contemporary society. Including consumer culture and materialism which entice with empty promises, promises of the "good life" offered through acquiring more, and living in luxury.

These things are promoted as the answer to personal happiness, value and fulfillment. The violent face of the empire is exposed in the systems and practices that exploit, discriminate against and destroy people and the natural world in the quest for a comfortable life in paradise.

Through my work I offer an invitation to rest and play and contemplate, to resist being co-opted by the empire and the courage to step out from it.

My desire is to re-imagine the world (one where social justice, fair-trade and care of the planet prevail) and from this create spaces that can be enjoyed and experienced as counter-imperial alternatives filled with hope."
