This funny and feel-good play is the perfect start to Riccarton Players 2018 season.

What’s more important: A teacher who plays by the rules or a teacher who gets the job done?

Laurie Connor has been teaching PE at Hautapu High for as long as anyone cares to remember. He is the definition of “old school” and he has no time for political correctness. If the curriculum gets in the way of him doing his job, the curriculum loses.

But, the kids love him.

The ambitious new principal, Viv Cleaver, has “some issues” with him. “Cleavage”, as Laurie calls her, has been brought in to clean house and raise the prospects of Decile 2 Hautapu High and Laurie doesn’t fit with her vision of the future.

Pat Kennedy is a former pupil of Laurie’s who has returned to teach at Hautapu High. He could do a lot better for himself but he is happy to just coast along as Laurie’s assistant.

Enter Annie Tupua, a Maori student teacher who just also happens to be a superb sportsperson on the verge of selection for the Silver Ferns.

Viv sees an opportunity, Laurie sees more work, and Pat sees a vision of loveliness.

The fact that Annie is a born-again Christian and a devout member of the Redemption Church makes life interesting for all.

Sparks fly, team dynamics shift, the whistle is blown and the audience are the winners!

We look forward to seeing you there!
