School holidays are just around the corner and Auckland/Waikato Fish & Game are preparing to release catchable sized trout into Lake Pupuke on April 19th.

Due to requests from parents and grandparents looking for outdoor entertainment for kids over the school holidays the traditional May release have been shifted to line up with the school holidays. Fish will be released around mid-day from a fish tanker on the edge of the lake in Sylvan Park next to the Madloop Windsurfing School.

Fish releases at Lake Pupuke are quite entertaining with over a 1000 large trout spilling into that lake and darting in all directions. The fish transport tanker is dark so when fish are flushed out into the lake they are completely disoriented and often end up sheltering on the lakes edge giving plenty of opportunity for children to see and touch fish.

Parents attending the event with children should prepare for kids to get wet and dirty as most kids can’t resist touching the fish and many get in the water to swim with the fish. Many of the children end up in the lake with the fish so supervision by a caregiver is required. Fish will eventually be pushed into deeper water with help from staff, children that attend and Daisy the fish dispersal Labrador.

Daisy is owned by staff member Adam Daniel and is used to chase fish out of the release area to prevent the local shags from turning them into a quick meal.

Trout can be caught from the lake edge using spinners, soft bait or fly casting following the release. Younger anglers who have not learned to cast may have better luck using bait suspended under a float. Anyone fishing for sports fish needs to have a valid licence but children under 11 can get a free licence and juniors (12-17 years old) can purchase a licence at a reduced cost.

Fishing licences can be purchased from most fishing retailers or from the Fish and Game website (http://www.fishandgame.org.nz/content/fishing-licence-info).

Note this event starts at 11am but will begin when the tanker arrives from Rotorua between 11 and midday.
