Biography:
New Zealand pianist Lorelle McNaughton, of Māori-Chinese and Scottish descent, was born and bred in Manukau and completed her Bachelor of Music at Auckland University before heading overseas to embark on further studies. After graduating from Auckland as a ‘Top Scholar’, where she studied with Rae de Lisle, Read Gainsford and Natalia Ricci, Lorelle then moved to Sydney to continue her studies and she began to specialise in the study of Spanish piano works.

Lorelle graduated with First Class Honours from the Sydney Conservatorium in 2011 and a Master of Music in 2015, where she learnt and performed Isaac Albéniz’s masterpiece Iberia, arguably one of the most complex works ever written for the piano. Lorelle received 98% for her final Masters recital at the Sydney Conservatorium and was encouraged to continue to explore the field of Spanish music.

Lorelle received many awards during her studies in both countries, including Auckland University’s Janetta McStay Prize for Pianists, Best Student in Performance, Kathleen Mary Reardon Memorial Music Scholarship, the Anne Bellam Music Scholarship, Tuakana Scholarship for Maori/Pacific Island students, and the Carl and Alberta Rosenfeldt Prize in Chamber Music.

She also received Māori Education Trust’s Francis Irwin Hunt Scholarship and was the winner of the Manukau Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition. During the course of her Masters studies in Sydney, Lorelle was awarded the Sonja Hanke Memorial Scholarship for Pianists, an Australian Postgraduate Award, the prestigious Albert Scholarship for Postgraduate students and a James King of Irrawang Travelling Scholarship.

In 2011 Lorelle was awarded first prize in the Greville/Coughtrey Piano Scholarship Competition in Sydney, which she used to undertake a short intensive course at the Academia Marshall in Barcelona. In December 2012, Lorelle was invited to present a paper at Melbourne Conservatorium’s Spanish Music Symposium; “Spanish Musics and their [Western] Others; Negotiating identity and exoticism”. She has also presented lecture-recitals at Avondale, Sydney, and Wollongong Conservatoriums conjointly with Natalia Ricci.
