Who doesn’t love wood? The burrs and knots and grooves and rings? The Living Wood Fair is a celebration of wood and an enjoyable, educational community event for all ages.

Set in the stunning environments of Totara Whenua & Fairholme Gallery in East Takaka the fair encompasses four main areas encircled by a beautiful cornucopia of trees. The main arena hosts the market and food stalls, kids’ activities, natural building area and information hub, with live musical acts throughout the day and locally-brewed beverages available.

The workshop zone features indoor and outdoor creative workshops while the Ministry of Primary Industries’ Talk Zone will hold inspiring and informative talks. The final zone is in the historic Fairholme Gallery displaying tree themed artistic creations.

The fair focuses on four key themes: All aspects of growing trees and turning them into timber; environmental sustainability, care and protection; creative arts, wood and bush crafts; and natural shelters and homes.

The Living Wood Fair will appeal to anyone who likes wood, including lifestyle and forestry-block owners, farmers, woodworkers and millers, self-builders and tiny home enthusiasts, forestry advocates, environmentalists and so on. It is also a fun day out for families: Renford Crump will run a bush crafts kids’ program; herbalist John Massey will share his knowledge on healing & edible plants; Henry Dixon teaches wooden spoon carving; Rekindle from Christchurch is teaching string-making; Light Earth Building with Steve Richards, Isaac Lane will provide an introduction to the ancient art of hedge-laying - and much more.

A great line-up of speakers including botanist Philip Simpson; local gardening guru Sol Morgan; specialists from MPIs Sustainable Forest Management team and Afforestation; Wayne and Tyler Langford from the Federated Farmers; Don Graves talking about mycorrhizal fungi and Glenn Page teaching chainsaw maintenance.

Two hours each day will be dedicated to a public forum about forestry in New Zealand with input from a variety of experts, forestry businesses and the general public. Themes include ‘How to future proof forestry with changing environmental challenges’ and ‘How to increase diversity in land use’. Damien O’Connor MP and the Forest Owners Association will be in attendance.
