A double-billed screening of two Merata Mita documentaries: Bastion Point: Day 507 and Patu!

Patu! is a startling record of the mass civil disobedience that took place throughout New Zealand during the winter of 1981, in protest against a South African rugby tour. Testament to the courage and faith of both the marchers and a large team of filmmakers, the feature-length documentary is a landmark in Aotearoa's film history.

Filmed in 1978 during the Bastion Point occupation, Bastion Point: Day 507 is one of Mita’s earliest films. In 1977, Joe Hawke and the Ōrakei Māori action Committee led an occupation of Bastion Point. Mita’s documentary follows the 507th and last day of the occupation, when 600 police arrested 222 members of the occupation.

Presented by Te Uru Waitākere Contemporary Gallery in partnership with Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision as part of the From the Shore: screening programme.
