A free hour-long concert will be given in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral to mark the Christchurch Diocesan Feast of St John the Baptist.

Mozart’s beautiful Litany of the Blessed Sacrament will be the major work, and it is believed to be a NZ premiere. Each of the verses of this once popular devotion is given memorable and challenging music, on the same scale of magnificence as his greatest Mass settings.

There is a striking balance within its varied movements between the pious tranquillity required for its performance in Salzburg Cathedral, and exuberant, vocally demanding, arias which would enthral any opera audience. Soloists will be Sarah-Jane Rennie, Michelle de Boer, Sam Madden, and Ken Joblin. The orchestra will be led by Natalia M. Lomeiko, and the conductor will be Don Whelan.
An interesting church connection sponsored Mozart’s “Paris” Symphony 31.

He was commissioned to write it for the Concert Spirituel, founded to provide entertainment on religious holidays, when the opera theatres were closed. First heard on the Feast of Corpus Christi, 1778, this was the grandest, work he had written for over three years, and was carefully calculated to appeal to a sophisticated audience in the Tuileries Palace.

At the first performance, to Mozart’s delight, it was interrupted constantly by enthusiastic applause. The concert begins with a delightful and quite playful motet in honour of the patronal feast: Inter Natos Mulierum.

Following the concert, those interested will be welcome to attend a social time in the adjacent CBS Music Centre, which will conclude at 5pm with an hour-long presentation on DVD of highlights of past CBS Music tours, from 1990 to 2015, showing some highlights of their performances in a number of great world cathedrals.

Another interesting year of varied activity for the CBS Choir and Orchestra includes more concerts, and the usual Christmas Messiah. A number of vacancies exist for choral leaders within the group, who enjoy unique opportunities to perform solo roles in significant Mass and motet settings with the orchestra and choir.

Leadership awards, and other scholarships, worth up to $3000 per year, are available to suitable applicants. Those interested are invited to contact the CBS Musical Director, Don Whelan, phone 358-5873.
