The National Concerto Competition is an annual musical competition for young people aged 25 years and under. This is the 52nd competition and 2018/2019 is for Instrumental competitors. We have 33 contestants in a variety of instruments, Violins, Cellos, Flutes, Clarinet, Oboe and even a Harp!

The competition is judged by 3 esteemed adjudicators - Tessa Petersen (Senior Lecturer in Violin at the University of Otago and Concertmaster of the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra); Bridget Douglas (Section Principal Flute for the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra) and Ashley Brown (Cellist and a member of the NZ Trio).

From the Preliminaries there will be 6 Semi-Finalists of which 3 will be chosen to compete in the Final on 23rd March 2019 accompanied by the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Kay.

The competition has always been based in Christchurch, something the Trust is very proud of, and being a National competition it attracts and encourages competitors from all over New Zealand.

The competition has built a strong national reputation by providing young people with an opportunity of up-skilling their music performances and many competitors see the competition as a "stepping stone" and have gone onto prominent careers in the music industry both nationally and internationally.

This competition is about young people, amazing musicians and challenging musical works. Come along and show your support and be wowed!
