New Zealand Sign Language - the most frequently used 'natural' language of the NZ deaf community. No class during school holidays.

Level C-D cover Units 6-9.

This course will emphasise your participation in communication activities to make learning fun and interesting. You will learn NZSL vocabulary and grammar as you focus on communicating about different topics in a variety of situations.

Communication in class will be in sign language only - leave your voice outside! this will help you to develop your visual language skills more quickly.

This course does not have a textbook & DVD. However, it is recommended that you buy the Unit 7-12 DVD and Student Workbook from the NZSL Teachers Association( This will help you to develop your NZSL skills outside of class. You will also receive additional handouts in class that may be useful for your personal study.

Learning Objectives.

The Level 1 C & D course builds on basic NZSL skills and you will be able to:
- Ask and tell about general wellbeing, health and everyday life
- Give compliments (eg appearance, clothing) and congratulations (eg celebrations)
- Recognise and use numbers: count from 20+, money and time
- Communicate about services & locations in the community (eg doctor, bank, library)
- Describe occupations, tasks and transport
- Negotiate appointments and make bookings
- Invitations: extend, accept and decline
- Understand /give simple directions and describe identifying features of homes
- Communicate about events, celebrations and holidays as well as talk about plans, destinations (Places) and modes of travel.
- Learn more cultural practices of the Deaf community
