Each year, The Kauri Museum invites the primary schools of the local Otamatea area, to participate in an exhibition for Matariki. The museum delivers a blank art board to each school and then collects them at a later date.

A theme is chosen for the event and each school allocated an aspect of the theme to illustrate in whatever manner, using whatever media they choose. This year's theme is the fish that abound in the two harbours of Otamatea. The opening date this year is the official starting day of Matariki and there will be representatives from the schools in attendance for the opening and also for a demonstration of the making and playing of traditional Maori instruments.

Anyone is able to attend the opening event. After 15 June, normal admission charges to the museum will apply unless you are a resident of the old Otamatea area, when there is no entry charge to the museum. The exhibition runs until Sunday 29 July.
