Wear your PJs, grab your torches and make your way to the Nelson Provincial Museum for the dramatic re-telling of local Māori legends.

Taonga pūoro, traditional Māori instruments, will be played in the darkness setting the scene for tales of the formidable taniwha (sea monsters) roaming Tasman Bay, Kupe’s epic battle with a giant wheke (octopus), and other fascinating stories about the places in our region and how they got their names.

Then move on to explore our Lower Gallery with your flashlight, on the hunt for precious taonga (treasures)... but whatever you do - stay clear of that dark cave!

For children aged 5-8, accompanied by a parent or caregiver.
45 - 60 minutes per session.

Free/koha appreciated. Bookings essential!
