Jaime Martín takes the reins of the NZSO National Youth Orchestra for its mid-year concerts, inspired by Diaghilev’s early 20th-century ballet works and designed to spark the imagination.

Joining the Orchestra is the youngest principal player in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Principal Bassoon Todd Gibson-Cornish. He is a former member of the NYO and performs Jolivet’s Bassoon Concerto, one of the most difficult in the bassoon repertoire.

De Falla’s The Three-Cornered Hat and Stravinsky’s The Firebird were both written for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes.

The Firebird was the start of a long collaboration between Diaghilev and Stravinsky, which included The Rite of Spring.

The concert also presents the world premiere of a new work by the 2018 NYO Composer-in-Residence, Josiah Carr.
