On the frontline of tactical urbanism: how low-cost, trial projects can reveal what communities value, and catalyse real change

Tactical urbanism - or the “lighter, quicker, cheaper” approach to changing streets - is a breath of fresh air in city planning and infrastructure. Tactical urbanism approaches let towns experiment, learn, and adapt fast to get our streets working better for people. Steve Burgess is one of the leading lights of tactical urbanism in Australasia and will share stories from the street - from his rich experience working with town centres (including a prizewinning project in Hobart).

Join us and discover how "lighter, quicker, cheaper" streetscape change projects can enhance (and accelerate) our conventional planning, design and approval processes. Embracing this approach for Wellington will mean better understanding of how our streets work for people, and good change happening faster.

Steve is an Engineer and Urban Strategist with 30 years’ experience around movement, transport, place, and carparking, and their influence on towns' and cities' prosperity.
He authored “Complete Streets - Guidelines to Urban Street Design” and is working with Bloomberg Philanthropies on developing street safety guidelines in 10 nominated cities across the globe.
