Our Supervolcano System: An introduction to the central Taupo Volcanic Zone.

Rotorua U3A will host a passionate volcanologist at their special forum on November 22 in the Bridge Clubrooms. Doors open at 9.30 when light refreshments are served.

Visitors are welcome with gold coin entry.

We’ll hear world-leading volcanologist Professor Colin Wilson FRS on his recent research into explosive volcanism close to home – close to our home, that is: he’ll discuss the secrets of super volcanoes in the Taupo Volcanic Zone, which extends from Ruapehu to White Island and of course includes Rotorua.

Currently the Professor of Volcanology in the School of Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences at Victoria University Wellington, geologist Colin Wilson received one of the highest international honours in science when, in 2015, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.

More recently Prof Wilson received the 2017 Rutherford Medal. Established in 2000, this award is the Royal Society of NZ’s highest honour to a scientist and only one is awarded each year. Colin is the first earth scientist to receive the medal.

Photo shows Colin Wilson, digging deep for science. Described as ‘an outstanding field-focused geologist’ Colin’s lifelong fascination has led him into a research career which now helps us better understand what’s going on beneath our feet.
