Pottery: Clay + Art and Design
Often the techniques of making pots are taught without much reference to design and arts’ visual language and the ideas for using it. In this hands-on course for those who have basic pottery skills, you’ll learn the finer points of these art and design elements, principles and processes in ceramic examples and see how they can be applied.
Like in cooking, being introduced to a few new ingredients and being guided in what to do with them can take you to a new level of creativity. Open-ended exercises using cut outs, markers, brushes and onto paper and pots will allow you to develop a personal exploration/sampler of techniques using point, line, shape and texture and use several design principles on a small series of pots.

You don’t need refined drawing skills to enjoy this course – with just dots, circles and stripes, you’re good to go. Time will also be included for making pots and glazing them.

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to:
Identify ten elements of visual language
Identify a number of design principles
Have explored these to make a personal sampler
Used some of these design principles in several pieces of your ceramic work
For those who have completed a beginners’ pottery course and have basic skills. Clay and some art materials will be provided. Please bring an apron, an A3 blank visual diary sketchbook for recording and exploring, three drawing tools (pencil, marker and artist’s paintbrush – watercolour ones with big tips are great) and any other personal clay working and art-making tools you may have.
