In order to give whānau and iwi an opportunity to rephrase the historical record, in 1990 TVNZ's Māori Programme Department produced Pounamu. The television series profiled and celebrated many important Māori figures.

This is a triple-episode screening profiling:

Te Ruki Kawiti was a leader of Ngāpuhi and a brilliant military strategist. He was a sought after tohunga and was the mastermind behind the Northern Land Wars. Like Te Kooti, he was either feared or revered depending on your point of view.

Te Kooti has a colourful historical record. Labelled a rebel by some he was a hero to others. A prophet and religious leader Te Kooti founded the Ringatū Faith as a Māori response to Christianity. He was relentlessly pursued by armed forces throughout the middle North Island before being pardoned of his supposed crimes.
