Nau mai, haere mai, join us as we set sail on our waka hourua, Tairawhiti.

Ko ta Tairāwhiti he whakakaurera ake i ngā hītori kaumoana i ahu mai i ngā moutere ki tēnei whenua, ko tā mātou he whakarauora ano i ēnei kōrero kei noho kau noa ki ngā pukapuka.
Haere mai koutou kia rongo ai i ēnei kōrero, kia tere tahi ai tāua ki te huapae, kia arahina tāua e ngā whetu.
Mā Tairāwhiti waka hourua tēnei ao e whakatuwhera ai, ka tāu he tomo mai.

Tairawhiti represents a proud and centuries-old history of Polynesian voyaging in this region, and has an important role to play in bringing our navigating history and dual heritage to life. Learn about our earliest seafaring traditions. Understand what it would be like to look to the horizon or to the stars and set sail into the unknown. And do all this on the same style vessel that brought the first tipuna, our first settlers, to Aotearoa New Zealand.

Ahakoa ō pukenga waka, ahakoa ō wheako i ēnei mahi e wātea ana he turanga kia koe, heoi ano ko tā mātou he whakatuwhera ki te hunga hiakai.

This experience is perfect for those with little or no sailing experience but who want to find out more about our waka.

Nga whakamārama:
E watea ana tēnei ki te hunga 15 te pakeke, tuhene atu anake.
Ka whakamaramatia nga kaupapa haumaru i a koe i mua tonu i te haerenga. Otira, kia hainatia tetahi kawenata hauora e koe.

What you need to know:
The sailing is limited to those aged 15 years and over.
There will be a full health and safety briefing before we set sail, including a medical declaration to sign.
Unfortunately, we are not able to provide wheelchair access to the waka.
Each session includes a half hour for registrations, a half hour health and safety briefing, and a two hour sail.

Please note: This event is weather dependent. If deemed too rough, the trip will be canceled and full refunds given.

About Tuia 250 ki Tūranga 2018
Over the weekend October 5 - 8, Tuia 250 ki Tūranga is presenting a number of events for the community designed to encourage us to explore the multiple histories of our region through art, kōrero, wānanga, sailing, karakia and good old fashioned manaakitanga. Tipuna kōrero will be shared in the library for whānau, the waka hourua Tairāwhiti will be hosting visits and sails, the MV Takitimu will be taking people out into the Bay with two story tellers and historians on board ready to share insights from the past 1000 years, there will be a discussion panel, local people sharing their insights, a live cross at the Museum to an exhibition half a world away featuring local taonga, and dawn karakia as we remember the fallen and share parakuihi afterwards.
It’s all open to the whole community and entry is either free or very low cost of $5.
