Part of New Zealand Archaeology Week 2018.

From the vices of alcohol and smoking to the staples of hotel dining and accommodation, this exhibition showcases the material culture of nineteenth century hotels in Christchurch. Victorian hotels in the city encompassed everything from dens of iniquity to establishments of luxury for the discerning traveler.

Each one has their own story, told through the impressions they left in the archaeological and historical record. So, come on down to South Library in Beckenham from the 1st of April to the 1st of May to see the artefacts used by guest and proprietor alike and learn just what went on in a nineteenth century Christchurch hotel…

The exhibition is free and open to all ages. Hours are on the Christchurch City Libraries website.
