Wellington city council and Hutt City animal services are partnering to offer a free training session to help you become a Responsible Dog Owner.

Come along during your lunch break and learn how to become a Responsible Dog Owner. Be ready to answer questions at the end of the course to qualify. This is a dogless event; just bring a pen and some lunch.
This session will be held at the Central Library in the Mezzanine room.

- Why being an RDO is important
- What type of fencing is suitable
- What type of shelter/housing is suitable for your dog
- Can you still be RDO if your dog is classified as menacing – and what makes a dog ‘menacing’
- How can you lose your RDO status
- The law and regulations around owning a dog – and why we have those laws
- Microchipping – when and why it is required
- What Councils are empowered to do
- Dog registration fees – what do they pay for?
- When your dog should be on a lead
- WCC bylaws and policies
- What ‘controlling your dog’ actually means
- Prohibited places for your dog
- How to protect your animals in an emergency – what should be in your pet preparedness kit
