Cecily needs little introduction to Christchurch audiences. Women here have loved her for the last eighteen years. Not just a stick thin pencil line drawing though, Cecily is a well-rounded cartoon character, sometimes more well-rounded than she would like! Cecily is someone that women recognise, for her foibles are their own.

Cecily diets, skips gym classes, sometimes drinks too much and worries about how she looks. She has bad hair days, occasionally consults her horoscope and struggles with technology. She is a modern woman who lives life to the full as she pursues career, friendship and love. Above all Cecily is about having a laugh.

Lyttelton based Celia Allison has worked for many years as a freelance illustrator/ graphic designer, steering away from computers towards hand-drawn whimsy. She created Cecily (some say her alter-ego!) who has appeared in many publications and on merchandise throughout New Zealand, Australia, England and America.

At last, there’s a chance to meet Cecily in person. She is looking forward to her stage debut with a mixture of apprehension and entitlement. Her creator, Celia Allison, has teamed up with writer and director Barry Grant to create Cecily. Barry, a big fan of Cecily, has been doing theatre as an actor, director and writer for over forty years.

It seemed a logical step for him to ask Celia if she would allow him to put Cecily on stage. To his delight she agreed, and has been a huge help in developing the script, drawing Cecily for the poster, and even supplying Marilyn Ollett (who plays Cecily) with a pair of Cecily glasses to wear in the production. Barry says, “we know there are many Cecily fans in Christchurch, and urge them to attend our production, clap loudly, and get to know her a little better. (Cecily made me put this plug in).”

At the same time, Riccarton Players will present another world premiere performance. The Child by Olwen Wymark was originally written as a radio play, broadcast in 1979, and never on stage until now.

The Child deals with a dysfunctional couple raising a daughter with a mental age well below her actual years. It is episodic on many levels and we gather insight on complex human relationships and the effect this in turn has on their lives.

Director, Doug Clarke, has wanted to stage this play for a long time but waited for the perfect cast to meet the challenges. They are Jo Cowey, Karyn Gibson, Marilyn Ollet, Christina Stachurski and Barry Grant.

Wymark was an American living in London, and a prolific writer – her first play was staged in 1966. Her most famous play, Find Me, won many awards for its confrontational approach to mental illness, which Olwen championed in many of her future works.

Cecily and The Child will be performed in The Drama Theatre, Rangi Ruru School, Merivale Lane.
