With funding from Creative New Zealand and support from Totaranui productions, The extraordinarily talented and iconic New Zealand artist Rob Ruha and his band The Witch Dr. brings Māoritanga into the mainstream with unflinching confidence, great tunes and their brand of music he calls “Haka-Soul”.

With summery funk and R&B soul sound that has something to say, Rob Ruha and the alliance of some of Aotearoa’s hottest musicians, Darren Mathiassen (Shapeshifter), James Illingworth (Bliss n Eso), Tyna Keelan (The Nok) and Johnny Lawrence (Electric Wire Hustle) a.k.a The Witch Dr. present Survivance at Maoriland Hub, Otaki on 27 April at 8pm.

This live presentation of music from their new album that promotes the Māori nation as current, relevant, spirited, prophetic, capable and unrelenting in their pursuit of self-determination - a trademark of Rob's music to date.

In recent years Rob Ruha has been an awards magnet for his ability to sing to and from the soul. His new album with his band The Witch Dr. confirms the diversity of his gifts and in 2017 received the honour of being named as one of five New Zealand Arts Laureate Award recipients of the NZ Arts Foundation Awards. Rob is a composer and artist of a new generation of Māori.

He is a product of powerful kapa haka traditions and indigeneity, who rooted in traditional knowledge transforms it into contemporary works of music. His unique style of ‘Haka-soul’ music has been performed and embraced all over the world and his compositions can be heard everywhere from the marae, to the kapa haka stage, from Spotify to international performance at major festivals around Aotearoa and worldwide and in the Disney smash hit Moana.

Doors open at 7pm, No BYO. Bar available with Eftpos. Barbeque and snacks for sale. Maoriland Social Club members and students with ID.
