Join Dunedin artist Rod Eales as she discusses the ideas and inspiration behind the paintings in her current exhibition Portrait of An Icon - The Crown Lynn Swan.

The exhibition celebrates an iconic feature of New Zealand’s social and cultural heritage, the Crown Lynn swan vase. The paintings are inspired by the artist’s own collection of swan vases and are either a circular or oval format.

The swan was produced in three sizes, with the larger and smaller versions the most popular. Over a period of 60 years the swan has undergone a complete cycle, from its height of popularity where almost every household had at least one, to relative obscurity, then back again.

Rod Eales was born on the coast of the Bay of Plenty. Since graduating with a Diploma in Fine Arts, and Diploma in Kindergarten Teaching at Dunedin, she has pursued the dual career of painting and teaching.

The exhibition runs until 29 April.
