School Holiday Fun at Kiwi North - Something for every generation.

As a combination of the only Kiwi House in Northland, the Whangarei Museum and the Heritage Park all set in a wonderful 25 hectares Kiwi North truly has something for everyone.

See Kiwi foraging as they would in the wild in the state of the art, purpose built nocturnal house where we turn day into a moonlight night.

The kiwi are fed, accompanied by a keeper's talk at 11am, 1pm and 3pm everyday. View Flash the tuatara in his enclosure or meet him up close during the tuatara encounter after 11am kiwi feeding, Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

The Museum galleries tell the stories of our local people and treasures. A selection of the extensive taonga Maori collection is on display, including a large kauri waka. A complete skeleton of the now extinct Moa bird, and images of the cave it was found in here on the edge of our city, is on display. This skeleton is over 2000 years old and the discoverer would nearly certainly have been the first human being to have been in that cave!

In the Mim Ringer Gallery the current exhibition is "Letters from Little America - Northland Explorers in Antarctica". This tells the story of 3 adventurous brothers who volunteered to accompany the American Admiral Byrd on his expeditions to Antarctica in the late 1920's and early 1930's.

The Robinson brothers came from a local Whangarei Heads family and there are still many members of the family in the area. 40 of them attended the exhibition opening! The family has generously loaned many personal mementos from the expeditions to add to the items already in the Museum collection.

Out on the Park the Clarke Homestead 1886, Oruaiti Chapel 1860, and Riponui Pa School 1898, are all open to explore. The big trains will be giving rides Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 10am to 2pm, and the mini trains on Wednesday only. On Wednesday it is "Club Day" at Kiwi North when the members of our various resident vintage restoration clubs are in their workshops. They enjoy visitors and all would welcome new members.

We do not have a cafe on site but do have the wonderful Thunder Mountain Coffee cart here Monday to Friday with Alice making superb coffee and hot chocolate, with a few yummy slices to accompany them. She is situated at Gate 1, adjacent to our car park and reception.

We look forward to welcoming you to Kiwi North these holidays.
