Hector’s dolphin research at Banks Peninsula: New discoveries and future directions

It may be routine to see Hector’s in Akaroa Harbour, but this is only because we’re lucky enough to live near a dolphin hotspot!

Hector’s are one of the most endangered species of dolphin and are only found along New Zealand’s coast. Researchers from the New Zealand Whale and Dolphin Trust and University of Otago have studied the dolphins here since the 1980s.

Hear from three PhD students, who are contributing to the long-term project, on some of their most recent findings and what they’ll be investigating next.

Tom Brough: Hotspots for Hector’s: “The where, when and why of important habitat for Hector’s dolphins at Banks Peninsula”.

Lindsay Wickman: “Scars that tell stories: what we can learn from dolphins’ unique marks”

Maria Jesus Valdes: “Aquaculture & dolphins: an ecosystem perspective”
