Shattering of A Plate Boundary: Geological and Environmental Impacts of The M7.8 Kaikoura Earthquake (New)

The Hawke’s Bay Branch of the Royal Society Te Apārangi, in partnership with GNS Science, presents The 1931 Hawke’s Bay Earthquake Commemorative Lecture with guest lecturer Russ Van Dissen.

Russ Van Dissen is an Earthquake Geologist with GNS Science his research specialities being earthquake geology and seismic hazard assessment. The 14/11/ 2016 Kaikoura Earthquake profoundly impacted the environment in North Canterbury and eastern Marlborough. Over 21 faults broke to the ground surface, permanently shifting the ground by up to 12 m.

About 10,000 landslides occurred, 200 blocking valleys to form temporary dams, and many roads were blocked, most notably SH 1. About 110 km of coast was shifted vertically, mostly uplifted by up to 6.5 m. A tsunami with run-up of up to 7 m was triggered, but the damage was minimal because it occurred at mid-low tide, and so much of the coast was uplifted.

This talk will summarise the learning’s to date on these and more.

Entry by gold coin donation.
