Celebrate the ideas and mana of creative women today!

It is the 125th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage in New Zealand, during which we celebrate our women’s right to vote. Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki is proud to be contributing to the celebration of this significant part of our history by bringing like-minded women together at "She Claims: Art Matters". Through stirring conversation, two inspiring women with a creative practice discuss their work, culture, society or other topics they feel passionate, concerned, excited, elated or angry about. Session five is a conversation between Ruth Buchanan and Natasha Conland.

About Ruth Buchanan
This year’s The Walters Prize nominee Ruth Buchanan (1980* Te Ati Awa/Taranaki) is a New Zealand artist living in Berlin. Buchanan's work is primarily concerned with the various systems at play in the production of culture such as libraries, collections, and artistic practice itself. She develops site and material specific strategies that include performance, sculpture, text, spatial structures, audio, film, textiles, and graphics. Buchanan’s work taps into the legacies of institutional critique, experimental theatre, and feminist discourse and practice. She has realised commissions at, amongst others, Adam Art Gallery in Wellington, Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, Tate Modern in London and the Gwangju Biennale.

About Natasha Conland
Natasha Conland is Curator, Contemporary Art at the Auckland Art Gallery. She has curated numerous exhibitions including "The Walters Prize" (coordinating curator since 2006), "Shout Whisper Wail!
