On the opening night of the festival, Leonard Bell tells, in words and pictures, the story of the extraordinary group of artists and writers, photographers and architects who arrived in New Zealand as forced European migrants: refugees from Nazism, those displaced after the Second World War and escapees from Communist countries.

Bell’s book, 'Strangers Arrive: Emigrés and the Arts in New Zealand, 1930–1980', takes us inside New Zealand’s bookstores and coffeehouses, studios and galleries to introduce us to a compelling body of work, and examines how the modernism of these new arrivals radically reshaped the arts in this country. Introduced by WORD Christchurch executive director and art-lover Marianne Hargreaves.
