Celebrate the 125th anniversary of New Zealand women receiving the vote by attending this fascinating workshop, hosted in the brand new Christchurch Archives New Zealand Reading Room.

In 1893 nearly 32,000 women – almost a quarter of the adult European female population of New Zealand at the time – signed the Women’s Suffrage Petition. Researching the stories of these women can tell us much about life in their time and the impulses that drove them to call for change. Prompted by the Archives New Zealand project to create biographies for each signatory to the petition, this workshop will demonstrate methods and sources to research women’s history using Archives New Zealand and online repositories.

Each speaker will cover different aspects of research including an introduction to Archives New Zealand and tools for biographical research, discovering the stories of marginalised women and connecting women’s stories with records of property ownership and occupation.

Speakers: Fiona Brooker (Memories in Time), Julia Bradshaw (Canterbury Museum), Christine Whybrew (Heritage New Zealand), Chris Adam (Archives New Zealand)

All attendees will be given a Suffrage 125 pin.
