Nau mai haere mai, join the crew on the waka hourua, Tairawhiti, for an exclusive one-day open day.

Kua whai ūnga hou tō tātou waka hourua i te wāpu. Mā ngā kaumoana koutou e ārahi ki runga i tō tātou waka, ki konā whakapuaki ai ētahi kōrero tātai whetū , kia tipu ake ai te māramatanga ki ngā mahi kaumoana a ō tātou tīpuna, i hōpara ai ngā moutere o te moana nui a kiwa i ngā mano tau ki muri nei.

The twin-berth waka will be moored in her new berth in the Inner Harbour. This hosted, small group experience will give you a deep understanding of the waka and what it takes to crew and navigate. See what our ancestors used to explore, discover and settle the islands of the largest ocean in the world, the Pacific Ocean some thousand years ago.

This open day is perfect for those looking for a quick introduction to the waka and those who would like to get a closer look at this impressive vessel in the relative safety of the Inner Harbour.

Ngā whakamārama :
Me whai kaitiaki ngā tamariki i raro i te 12 te pakeke.
I mua i tō pikinga ki runga i te waka, ka whakamāramatia ai ngā kaupapa here e haumaru ai tō noho i runga i te waka.
E whakapāhā ana mātou i te korenga o te ara e āhei ai te hunga eke tūru wīra.
Ngā mahi kei ia akoranga:
10 miniti te roa o te whakatau ia koutou, otirā he whakakīkī pepa rēhita , he whakamārama hoki i ngā haumarutanga te mahi.
40 minute te roa o te hīkoi haere i te waka, mā tētahi o ngā kaumoana koutou e ārahi , e whakamārama hoki i ngā mahi o runga.
Ka whai wā hoki tātou ki te whakatepe, 10 miniti te roa.

What you need to know:
All children must come with a responsible adult.
There will be a full health and safety briefing before we begin each session.
Unfortunately, we are not able to provide wheelchair access to the waka.
Each session includes a ten-minute land-based welcome, registration and health and safety briefing, a 40-minute hosted group session, a ten-minute wrap up, a cuppa and a korero.

About Tuia 250 ki Tūranga 2018
Over the weekend October 5 - 8, Tuia 250 ki Tūranga is presenting a number of events for the community designed to encourage us to explore the multiple histories of our region through art, kōrero, wānanga, sailing, karakia and good old fashioned manaakitanga. Tipuna kōrero will be shared in the library for whānau, the waka hourua Tairāwhiti will be hosting visits and sails, the MV Takitimu will be taking people out into the Bay with two story tellers and historians on board ready to share insights from the past 1000 years, there will be a discussion panel, local people sharing their insights, a live cross at the Museum to an exhibition half a world away featuring local taonga, and dawn karakia as we remember the fallen and share parakuihi afterwards.
It’s all open to the whole community and entry is either free or very low cost of $5.
