Friends of Rotorua Museum present a talk about the ‘lost’ final English language draft of the Treaty of Waitangi on Sunday 26 August 2018, 2pm at Te Rūnanga Tea House.

Carol Smyth was instantly hooked when she discovered that there was a mismatch between the ‘official’ English version of the Treaty of Waitangi and the original Te Tiriti in Te Reo.

Smyth will discuss her fascinating journey pulling together the diverse range of clues that make up the story of the “Littlewood Treaty”.

Carol was born in Lancashire, United Kingdom, and lived in Liverpool for many years. She studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music before teaching music at high schools in England. She immigrated to New Zealand with her family in 1984 and continued teaching music at high schools in the Bay of Plenty. Her last 20 years as Music Specialist at Kaitao Intermediate before retiring in 2017.

Carol feels privileged to have received scholarships and grants to enable a good education and has seen into the lives of a huge range of people through other jobs: as a Police Officer in the UK; and as a Court Registrar running District Court Jury Trials here in Rotorua.

Leisure activities include the local Musical Theatre of which she is a Life Member. She has studied aspects of Māori culture, attending several workshops on Taonga Puoro (traditional Maori musical instruments). This has since expanded to include a passion for NZ history, which has led to her interest in the Treaty of Waitangi.

Tickets are available to purchase from Rotorua Lakes Council Reception (1061 Haupapa St, Rotorua) from 9 July 2018.

Numbers are limited for this popular talk so get in quick.
