Written by Shelagh Delaney, aged eighteen, A Taste of Honey is set in working-class Salford (Manchester) and is full of Northern grit and humour. Kenneth Tynan, the well-known British critic, said, “Miss Delaney brings real people on to her stage, joking and flaring and scuffling and eventually, out of the zest for life she gives them, surviving.”

The play, which many commentators have said laid the groundwork for Coronation Street, explores variations on the themes of love, intimacy, mothers and daughters, sexual freedom, interdependency, racial, class and sexual prejudice, and abandonment.

Alcoholic, promiscuous Helen (Jacqué Mandeno) runs off with her younger lover (Rob Campion), while her feisty teenage daughter Jo (Philippa Mandeno) takes up with a black sailor (Adrian du Toit), who promises marriage before heading back to sea. Effete art student Geoffrey (Alex Eichelbaum) attempts to create a settled home for Jo, but how will Helen take this?

Directed by Steve Wright, this exceptional cast successfully brings to life a set of memorably authentic and still-relevant characters. Our production marks the 60th anniversary of the play’s première on 27 May 1958.
