Travel with Steam Incorporated North from Kapiti via Palmerston North to the river city of Whanganui enjoying a full day of steam travel.

The train will be hauled by one of our coal fired steam locos. It will comprise our fleet of classic red carriages.

The train will include a buffet counter selling sandwiches, sausages, hamburgers, drinks and snacks. You are welcome to bring your own food along. In the evening we hope to offer the option of a pre ordered takeaway meal at Palmerston North.

All train seating is preassigned.

A new Wanganui attraction is the Tramways Wanganui Trust depot and museum. Here you can inspect the completed restoration of Wanganui tram No 12. Short rides may be available for $2. You will have 2.5 hours in Wanganui to either go on one of our prebooked tours or do your own thing during the stopover. Such as visit one of the cafes in nearby Victoria Street, visit the Sarjeant Gallery, New Zealand Glassworks, Riverboat Centre or the Tram Barn.

The following options are available at our destination:
Option 1 – “Waimarie” Paddle Steamer
Enjoy a short cruise (approx. 1 hour) on the Whanganui River on New Zealand’s only steam powered paddle steamer. The Waimarie was built in 1900 and is still coal fired. Limited seats. Adult $20, Child $10

Option 2 – “Wairua” River boat cruise to Upokongaro
On the 1904 built Wairua. About 1 hour each way plus 20 minutes at Upokongaro. Tea & coffee available on the boat. We suggest you bring your own lunch. Plus opportunity to photograph the Waimarie in action. Adult $35, Child $20

Option 3 – Whanganui Sightseeing Tour
A 2.5 hour tour expected to include Durie Hill Tower, Riverboat Centre, Bason Botanic Gardens, Cameron Blockhouse, Kowhai Park, Virginia Lake, Wanganui Collegiate & Royal Opera House. Pickup and dropoff at the train. Minimum numbers required. Adult $45, Child $25
