The Subterraneans is a play based on a series of short stories from the book Sub-Terra by Chilean writer Baldomero Lillo. The Subeterraneans narrates the story of mine workers, presenting different scenes of their lives, their struggles and constant worries about money, family and death. The play addresses the status that miners have in society. The Subterraneans could be conceived as “the others” who are somewhat separate from society and their lifes and stories come to focus only when a tragedy strikes.

Although The Subterraneans is an adaptation of a Chilean story it can be associated with New Zealand mining culture, historically in Central Otago and contemporary in Pike River. Thus, it resonates with an Aotearoa/New Zealand context as it addresses topical and current issues, and celebrates human connection that cuts across cultures, demonstrating shared humanity. This play is interdisciplinary in nature; an amalgamation of storytelling techniques, physical theatre, stylized choreography, and a bilingual text. By using Spanish and English languages and a Latin American text, The Subterraneans opens the performance to a wider audience with different cultural backgrounds, reflecting the diverse society living in Dunedin and Aotearoa/New Zealand.

Part of the dance crew are members of Gasp! Dance Collective collaborating with us to create a platform for sharing different points of view, opening dialogue across cultures and disciplines, exploring new artistic possibilities, and enabling the local artists, creators and performers to come together and collaborate, enhancing the livelihood of the creative community in Dunedin.
