“Your name is given to you before you are born, to make up what you lack and therefore – complete you. My name is Grace.”

PAT - Proudly Asian Theatre is excited to team up with Spooky Antix to present an experimental work from acclaimed creative Nikita 雅涵 Tu-Bryant in Wellington this December.

Tide Waits for No Man: Episode Grace (歲月不饒人: 雅安).

Grace [雅安] is a modern Taiwanese artist who has grown up in Aotearoa. Tailoring her life to be as kiwi as they come, an unexpected call from her homeland sends Grace into a tailspin. A surreal battle of ancient culture and modern identity unfolds, as she grasps for answers among her Ye-Ye’s patriarchal teachings.

An ensemble of three Kiwi-Asian women use shadow puppetry, object puppetry and movement to ask the question; when finding acceptance means bending our beliefs, what do we sacrifice?

Starring Nikita 雅涵 Tu-Bryant and performed alongside Chye-Ling Huang (Orientation, Call of the Sparrows) and choreographer Marianne Infante (Aroha Mai, Ruminations), Tide Waits has been developed with PAT over two workshops.

With Guest dramaturg Yuyang Ellison Tan (Singapore), and lighting by Nic Cave-Lynch of Many Hands Lighting. Special thanks to Het Nimajneb for development workshops one and two.

“For the last 4 years, Tide Waits for No Man has seen many reincarnations in the safety of my notebook. Turning 30 made me realise that nothing is ever finished, nor is it ever a stagnant thing - it is forever evolving, breathing. This is my first work. It is the first episode of Tide Waits for No Man. I introduce you to, Grace.” - Nikita 雅涵 Tu-Bryant
